Comments: A fuss about nothing

Or perhaps we can’t blame people for panic-buying petrol after the coverage in the mass media.

After all, there have been a lot of ‘stories’ of fears of what could happen to petrol supplies this week (the ‘f’ and ‘c’ words of journalism). But there have been very few reports of the factual probability of those fears being realised – or indeed any admission from media people of their complete ignorance of the facts and probabilities in the first place.

This all makes for good entertaining stuff but remember the MPC chooses to inform the nation about the state of play on interest rate policy through the media. If the mass media are going to sensationalise every issue, how long before the MPC sees the mass media as part of the problem, rather than the solution?
