Balls, Darling or Straw?

The FT claimed yesterday that the choice of chancellor when (if?) Gordon Brown becomes prime minister has narrowed down to Ed Balls, the City minister, Alistair Darling, trade and industry secretary, and Jack Straw, leader of the House of Commons. Balls may be seen as too young and close to Brown, and may not want it; Darling too Scottish, so Straw - on this view - comes up on the rails.

There are, however, others. The excellent political betting website --- www.politicalbetting.com ---- gives the latest odds. Darling is favourite, followed by Balls and Straw. Other names in the ring, at least among the punters, are Stephen Timms, Patricia Hewitt, David Miliband, John Healey, Hilary Benn and Ruth Kelly. Some in the City think Charles Clarke is worth a punt.

Doesn't matter, whoever it is won't last long once the potemkin economy collapses around their ears.
