On Nickell, I'm already feeling a little sorry for whoever is his replacement come May. Four ex-monetary policy committee members have sparked the Treasury into insisting that it will be somebody of the highest intellectual calibre, from a long list of high-reputation international economists. A few years ago, when Chris Allsopp replaced Charles Goodhart, one member of the Commons Treasury committee (Brian Sedgemore) said it was like replacing Arsenal with Kidderminster Harriers.
