How bad is America's external position? Ricardo Hausmann and Frederico Sturzenegger recently set the cat amongst the pigeons by arguing that there has been no cumulative US current account deficit over the past quarter-century. Willem Buiter, ex of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, disagrees strongly. Here is his typically robust response.
