New figures suggest Britain's growth rate last year, 2.3%, was even stronger than first thought. Growth in the fourth quarter, with GDP up by 0.9% and 2.8% higher than a year earlier, confirmed the strength of the upturn. Some City forecasters now see growth exceeding the Treasury's 3% to 3.5% forecast for this year (as do some in the Treasury). That means higher interest rates, although probably not for a month or so.
