Two fascinating facts

Looking back on 2003 and into 2004, two fascinating facts jump out. Let me share them with you.

1. The UK economy is enjoying its longest period of growth - ever. This will be the 13th consecutive calendar year of growth, without a single quarter of negative growth since the spring of 1992. Quarterly records go back to the 1950s, annual data to the 1870s, and it is better than anything achieved over that period. Before then, the agricultural economy gave us a more pronounced economic cycle. A run of GDP data is on the official statistics site - under time series data.

2. Last year was the best for global equities since 1986. Figures from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein show a weighted rise of 31% in global equity markets, better than any single year in the roaring nineties. It didn't feel like that back in February and March.
